I'm in the same confusing state right now, to choose between the Mini and AMP, so how better is the mini in temps? NVIDIA’s tenth gen assault is well underway with the latest 1060 graphics card landing today. Unfortunately, GTX 1060 samples are even harder to find than 1080s at launch. The good news is the guys at ZOTAC hooked us up with their $279 GTX 1060 AMP! card for a hot minute. And by “hot minute” I mean a couple hours a few days ago. And since NVIDIA hadn’t released demo drivers by that point, we didn’t even get to play with the new 16nm GPU in the real world. I guess we're stuck using the 1080 AMP! Extreme pictured below. It's hard to be a reviewer.
First, the launch of the 1060 is different than the previous 1070 or 1080. This time around, the GTX 1060 Founders Edition is only available on NVIDIA's website for $299, or $50 more than the $249+ custom designs from GPU makers. Also, the Founders Edition, like the 1070 and 1080 FE models, is a blower style card rather than the fancy fan models you really want.
What’s interesting about the GTX 1060 (other than the performance, naturally) is how freaking small it is. The ZOTAC version is barely more than 8” long. Compare that to their 13” AMP! EXTREME card pictured below. And the 8” is the standard version, there’s also a dwarf version at 6.5”. This is seriously small territory. Some of the other 1060 fan designs, including the FE model, run 12' like a big boy card. But the PCB itself is only around 8' making this perfect for SSF builds.
When I first saw the new ZOTAC 1060 I was like “It’s so cute!” And then ZOTAC told me that’s what all the girls at the office said. Yeah, I guess I was supposed to comment on the GPU’s carbon fiber battle armor or something.
I will say that ZOTAC is rapidly becoming my favorite GPU manufacturer in the looks department. The ZOTAC card is one of the most aggressive (and expensive) designs out there. The carbon and metal look mimicks more expensive machined metal styling. To my eyes, the ZOTAC feels like a level above most of the competition's black plastic designs. I think it’s time to put ZOTAC GPUs in direct competition with the big dogs. At least, I think they're spending the coin to get people to notice. It's working for me.
Back to size -- I popped the 1060 is a tiny Silverstone Milo ML08 case to get a feeling for an upcoming portable VR build. The Milo is a mini mini ITX case barely larger than a first gen XBox. But the ZOTAC is so small it makes this ITX case look huge. For SSF fans with NCases or SG13s or any manner of bitty boxes, the 1060 is going to be a new champ.
As for performance, the 16nm Pascal architecture found in the 1060 is about half the power of the GTX 1080. That means 1280 CUDA Cores vs the 2560 found in the GTX 1080. The required power is around 120w compared to 150w for the 1070 and 180w for the 1080.

Finally, the 1060 runs with 6GB DDR5 RAM vs the 8GB of the 1070 and 1080.
The downside is the 1060 is said to be incompatible with SLI (at least in its current form). So no doubling up on 1060s expecting single 1080 performance.
But word on the street is the 1060 is more powerful than the GTX 980 which, until a month ago, would run you $500. So $250 for $500 performance is a pretty good deal in my book.
